How to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT

AI assistants answer questions by pulling from pages they can fetch, parse and trust. If your site is hard to read for a machine, you simply will not appear in the answer. Here is what actually moves the needle, in the order worth doing it.

1. Let the crawlers in

ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity each use their own crawlers. If your robots.txt blocks them, nothing else in this guide matters. Check that these user agents are allowed: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot.

Also make sure your key pages return real HTML. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs is often invisible to these fetchers.

2. Say plainly who you are and what you do

Assistants quote specifics, not slogans. Every important page should state, in plain text, what you sell, who it is for, where you operate and what it costs. A single sentence such as "We are a dental clinic in Reykjavik offering same-day implants from 180,000 ISK" is far more quotable than "Redefining smiles."

3. Add structured data

Schema.org markup in JSON-LD tells machines what your page is about without guessing. At minimum add Organization (name, logo, contact, social profiles), Product or Service with pricing, and FAQPage for your common questions. For a physical business, add LocalBusiness with address and hours.

4. Publish answers to the questions people actually ask

Write a page per real question, with the answer in the first two sentences and the detail underneath. Assistants favour pages where the answer is extractable without reading the whole document. Headings phrased as questions, short paragraphs and simple lists all help.

5. Add an llms.txt file

An llms.txt at your domain root is a plain summary of your business and a map of your most useful pages, written for language models. It is an emerging convention rather than a guarantee, but it is cheap to add and makes your key facts unambiguous.

6. Get mentioned somewhere else

Models lean heavily on third-party sources: industry directories, review sites, Wikipedia-class references, forum threads and news coverage. A consistent name, address and description across those sources does more for AI recommendations than any change on your own site. Start with the two or three directories that dominate your niche.

7. Keep it fresh, then measure

Stale pages get dropped. Update prices, availability and dates, and keep an author or last-updated signal visible. Then check the result: ask the assistants your own buying questions and see whether you show up, and rescan your site regularly to catch regressions.
