Guide
AI visibility for small business
Updated 16 September 2026
More people now ask an assistant instead of typing a search. They say "who is a good plumber near me" and get three names back. If your business is not one of them, you never find out. This guide shows how a small business gets named.
Step 1: let the assistants in
Many websites quietly block the AI crawlers. It is often a setting a theme or plugin turned on, not a decision anyone made. If ChatGPT cannot open your pages, nothing else you do matters.
Check first. Our free AI crawler checker tells you in seconds whether your site is open to them.
Step 2: put the plain facts on the page
Assistants repeat facts, not slogans. Write what you do, where you do it, who it is for, what it costs and how to reach you. Short sentences. Real numbers. No "market-leading solutions".
- Services. Name each one the way a customer would say it.
- Area. The towns or neighbourhoods you actually serve.
- Price signal. A range or a starting price beats silence.
- Proof. Years in business, licences, reviews, real photos.
Step 3: answer the questions buyers ask
Assistants pull from pages that answer a question directly. Write a short answer under a clear heading: how much does it cost, how long does it take, do you come out on weekends, what happens if it goes wrong.
One page with ten honest answers does more for you than ten pages of marketing copy.
Step 4: add the machine-readable basics
Two small files help assistants understand you: structured data on your pages, and an llms.txt file at your site root that says what your business does and which pages matter. Neither takes long, and you can generate the file free.
Step 5: keep watching
Answers change. A competitor rewrites a page, an assistant updates its model, and you drop out of the list without anyone telling you. Monitoring checks the questions your buyers ask and tells you when your name stops appearing.
Common questions
- Why does ChatGPT not mention my business?
- Usually one of three reasons: your site blocks AI crawlers, your pages do not state the plain facts an assistant needs, or other businesses answer the question better than you do.
- Do I need to be a big brand to be quoted by AI?
- No. Assistants quote clear, specific pages. A small local business with plain facts about services, area and prices often beats a large site full of slogans.
- How long does it take to see a change?
- Crawler and page fixes are picked up within days to a few weeks. Being named in answers usually changes over weeks, not overnight.
- Is this the same as SEO?
- It overlaps but it is not the same. SEO aims at a ranking in a list. AI visibility aims at being the business the assistant names in its answer.
