How to rank in ChatGPT

Published 10 October 2026

Ranking in ChatGPT means being one of the few businesses it names when someone asks for a recommendation. You get there by letting its crawlers read your site, getting indexed in Bing, and writing pages that answer real questions in plain facts. Here are the seven steps, in the order that matters.

1. Let the AI crawlers in

ChatGPT uses OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot to read sites. If your robots.txt or a security plugin blocks them, you cannot rank at all. This is the most common problem we find.

2. Get indexed in Bing

ChatGPT search leans heavily on Bing. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and use IndexNow so new pages are picked up within hours, not weeks.

3. Say plainly what you do, where, and for whom

Put one sentence near the top of your homepage that a machine can repeat: "We are a plumbing company in Reykjavik offering same-day boiler repair." Slogans give ChatGPT nothing to quote.

4. Answer the questions buyers actually ask

People ask ChatGPT full questions like "best accountant for freelancers in Austin". Make one clear heading per question and answer it in the first two sentences below it.

5. Add structured data and an llms.txt file

Schema markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage) and a short llms.txt file tell AI exactly who you are, so it does not have to guess from the wrong page.

6. Be mentioned on other sites

ChatGPT trusts businesses that other sources talk about: directories, reviews, local news, industry lists. A handful of real mentions beats hundreds of spammy backlinks.

7. Measure, then repeat

Ask ChatGPT the same buyer questions every week and note who gets named. A monitoring tool does this for you and shows which competitor is taking your spot.

Common questions

Is there a ranking in ChatGPT like in Google?
Not a list of ten links. ChatGPT writes one answer and names a few businesses in it. Ranking in ChatGPT means being one of the names in that answer, ideally the first.
Where does ChatGPT search get its results?
ChatGPT search reads the live web, largely through Bing's index, plus its own crawler OAI-SearchBot. If Bing has not indexed your site, ChatGPT search usually cannot find it.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Fixing crawler access and indexing can show results within days to a few weeks. Being named for competitive questions takes longer and depends on how well your pages answer them.
Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?
No. There is no paid placement inside ChatGPT answers today. The only route is making your site easy to read, clearly factual and trusted by other sites.
